Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of space.

The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
