In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts shaking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, without immediately offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Major events preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
