New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
