A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
